What is an Instant Pot Electric Pressure Cooker?

Instant Pots are smart multi-use electric pressure cookers designed to be safe, convenient, and dependable. Safety is the most important part of any kitchen appliance. With the Instant Pot, you will prepare your meals faster while using less energy.

You’ll spend less money on electricity while saving counter space. What’s also nice is in the summer you won’t add extra heat to your kitchen while cooking hot meals.

Instant Pot usually releases a new model or two every year. In 2019 several new models were introduced, including the Duo Crisp. The Pro Crisp followed a year later.

What is an Air Fryer?

An air fryer is a small kitchen countertop appliance that simulates deep frying by circulating hot air at high speeds. It’s a smaller version of a convection oven and can be purchased as a basket-based model, an air fryer oven, or an air fryer toaster oven. You may also be able to find full-sized ovens with air frying features as well.

Air frying is generally considered a healthier option compared to deep frying because it uses a fraction of the oil. You can use an air fryer to make favorites such as french fries.

These countertop appliances generally allow you to air fry, reheat, broil, bake, and sometimes dehydrate. It will depend on the features included in the specific model you purchase.

Instant Brands, the makers of the Instant Pot, makes several types of air fryers. You’ll likely be familiar with the basket models. They also make an air fryer oven along with air fryer toaster oven. Depending on your cooking needs you could either buy a standalone air fryer or consider a pressure cooker + air fryer combined option.

And what’s interesting about the Instant Pot Pressure Cookers + Air Fryers is it gives you two completely different types of cooking in one kitchen appliance. To do this, the Instant Pot comes with two different lids, one for each cooking method.

If this is your first time shopping for an Instant Pot or you’re ready for another one, check out this side-by-side comparison of the Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs Pro Crisp to help you figure out which model is best for you.

Instant Pot Pro Crisp + Air Fryer, the latest combined version

The Instant Pot Pro Crisp + Air Fryer is one of the electric pressure cooker models made by Instant Brands. They call it their “Instant Pot that air fries” model because it combines their pressure cooking features with an air fryer. The latest version of this pressure cooker + air fryer takes a few things from the Duo Evo Plus including the inner line design pressure cooking lid, and dial-based front panel.

Currently, the Pro Crisp is only available in an 8-quart model with a black stainless steel exterior.

Instant Brands calls it an 11-in-1 Instant Pot because it has 11 smart programs. It replaces multiple kitchen appliances while also increasing the speed at which you can cook your meals.

In order to cook in two different methods, the Pro Crisp comes with 2 lids: one for pressure cooking and one for air frying.

It has several of the core smart programs the company offers in their other electric pressure cookers, but not all of them. In addition, it has 5 smart programs specific to the air fryer lid.

The Pro Crisp has an easy seal lid that automatically seals. It comes with 1 sealing ring, two lids, a trivet, and air frying accessories.

Instant Pot Duo Crisp, the first combined version

The Instant Pot Duo Crisp was released by Instant Brands in November 2019. They call it one of their “Instant Pot that air fries” models. It also combines multiple kitchen appliances into one device while combining two cooking modes too.

The “duo” in the name refers to the 2 pressure cooking levels it has. Their original pressure cooker model only had one pressure. The Duo Crisp is available in two sizes: 6 quarts and 8 quarts.

8 Quart Duo Crisp

In addition to being originally released in November 2019 as an 8 quart, Instant brands released a smaller 6 quart exclusive to Walmart later. Depending on the features you want double-check the box or product page before making a purchase to ensure you buy the version you intended.

What are the differences between the Instant Pot Pro Crisp and Duo Crisp?

Overall the Duo Crisp and Pro Crisp are both pressure cookers that come with air frying features and the same smart programs.

The major differences between the models include the inner lines, pressure cooker lid, extra temperature settings, and base prices. The other thing to note is the Duo Crisp is available in 2 sizes while the Pro Crisp is available in one size currently

The 8 differences between the Pro Crisp and Duo Crisp are the following:

Each model has a different inner liner

The Pro Crisp comes with the new stove-top friendly liner with easy-grip handles and a flat bottom that was introduced with the Duo Evo Plus. If you have an existing Instant Pot at the same quart size, the older inner pot is not compatible with this model.

The handles on the new liner design really do make it easier to remove a hot pot from the base.

Pro Crisp has the gentle steam release

Another nice feature of the Pro Crisp is a gentle steam release that was also introduced in the Duo Evo Plus. Instead of worrying about coating your ceiling in steam, the updated lid in this model controls the steam release when you’re done cooking.

Both pressure cookers have an auto-seal lid which is a nice feature to keep you from forgetting to do that step when you start cooking.

With the Duo Crisp, the button release is a little more difficult to do a controlled release of pressure. So the upgrade in the Pro Crisp is helpful.

Duo Crisp 8 quart is a little taller and lighter

The new Instant Pot + Air Fryer is a little heavier than the previous model. The Pro Crisp weighs a little over 26 lbs. If you’re concerned about lifting that much weight, lift it in pieces instead. Move the lid separately from the base and remove the liner, especially if it’s full.

The updated Air Fryer lid is about an inch shorter than the original version. Depending on how your store your Instant Pot, this could be useful as well.

The Duo Crisp is available in a 6 quart option

One of the larger differences between the Instant Pot Pro Crisp and Duo Crisp is the Duo Crisp is available in a 6-quart model. That’s the smallest currently available so if you want a smaller 3 quart mini Instant Pot and air fryer you’ll need to buy two different kitchen appliances.

Before making a purchase double-check the product listing to make sure it has the smart programs and features you’re looking for. Sometimes they update the models with a slightly different combination of smart programs based on feedback.

The max temperature on the Pro Crisp is hotter

Looking at the air fry lid smart programs side by side, you’ll notice the maximum temperature for the Pro Crisp has increased to 450 F. The Duo Crisp’s top temperature is 400 F.

Depending on what you’re cooking, the extra hot temperature will be helpful, especially if you’re using the broiler function. And note with the broiler function on both models, you can’t adjust the temperature.

The Pro Crisp has a new black stainless steel exterior

Most Instant Pots are available in traditional stainless steel with black plastic accents. A few versions of Duo and Lux have been sold in different colors or themes. The new Pro Crisp was designed with a new look using an updated black stainless steel appearance. It’s a nice change from the other models.

Prices vary between the models and sizes

And finally, the prices will vary depending on the size and Instant Pot model you buy. With different features come different prices. Typically the Pro Crisp will cost more than the Duo Crisp, given the new lid features and higher cooking temperature. Keep an eye out for special deals and flash sales to save money on your purchase.

Side by Side comparison of the Instant Pot Duo Crisp vs Duo Plus

To help you take a closer look into the Pro Crisp and Duo Crisp, here is a side-by-side comparison of the two models. This comparison reviews the kitchen appliances combined, the included smart programs, size options, and overall specs of each model.

The kitchen appliances combined with each model

Typically when making an Instant Pot comparison, it also includes a side-by-side view of the kitchen appliances included in each mode. Combining multiple kitchen appliances into one saves counter and storage space. You also save money by using one appliance for multiple cooking methods.

With the Instant Pot + Air Fryer models, they’re combining an electric pressure cooker and an air fryer. Both of these models have the core features but are not as vast as their other electric pressure cooker-only models.

Both the Pro Crisp vs Duo Crisp combine 6 to 7 kitchen appliances. These two models take the place of a:

  • Pressure Cooker
  • Air Fryer
  • Saute/Searing Pan
  • Slow Cooker
  • Steamer
  • Warmer

Here is a view of the kitchen appliance side-by-side combined in the Instant Pot Duo Crisp and Pro Crisp.

The Pro Crisp also can be considered a stock pot because the inner liner for this model is stove-top friendly.

On both models, the saute function allows you to pre-cook ingredients as needed for a recipe without pulling out a separate plan. And the warm function keeps your food hot after the cooking process is done.

You’ll notice neither of these models is considered a yogurt maker or rice cooker because they don’t have the associated pre-programmed buttons. You can still make yogurt and rice in the Instant Pots. Look for a recipe that uses the pressure cook or other available buttons for these dishes instead.

By combining multiple appliances into one kitchen appliance, preprogrammed buttons help you take advantage of the different cooking functions.

Smart programs and functions compared side by side

Instant Pots use smart programs to control heat intensity, temperature, pressure, and cooking duration at the push of a button. The company designed each program based on extensive testing to help you create delicious meals.

There are 11 smart programs included in each of the Instant Pot + Air Fryer models with 6 being “wet” cooking methods and 5 being air fryer related. The same set of programs are available in both of these models. These models have fewer “wet” cooking programs than the other Instant Pot models.

If you’d like to make a cake in either of these methods you can either use the Pressure Cook button for a “wet” cooking option or the Bake button with an air fryer lid for a dry cooking option.

For the famous hard-boiled eggs you hear about with Instant Pots, these models have the Steam button, which is a frequently recommended approach.

Check your recipe for how long to set the cooking time for whatever you’re planning to make.

Specification Comparison

Here’s a look at the 3 Instant Pot + Air Fryer models side by side. You’ll notice they all have the same power level of 1500 watts. With the Pro model, the overall weight is up 3.5 lbs from the previous 8 quart model.

One thing to keep in mind with both of these models is that aside from the air-fryer function being added to the control panel, each has an additional lid. These separate lids are used for pressure cooking vs air fryinger.

The new Pro Crisp air fryer lid is a little shorter than the Duo Crisp 8 qt version. The Duo Crisp is a little narrower than the newer model because the new model has a front panel dial.

The sizes available for Instant Pot Pro Crisp and Duo Crisp

The primary Instant Pot sizes are: 3 quart, 6 quart, and 8 quart. In the case of Instant Pot Pro Crisp vs Duo Crisp, they’re available in a limited set of sizes.

The Instant Pot Pro Crisp is currently only available as an 8 quart. The Instant Pot Duo Crisp is available in 6 quart and 8 quart options. If you’re trying to find the 6 quart size, check Wal-mart for availability.

The quart sizes available for each model include:

The accessories in the box with each model

In the box along with the two lids each Instant Pot + Air Fryer model comes with, the additional accessories include:

  • inner liner
  • sealing ring
  • air fryer basket
  • broil/dehydrate tray
  • steam rack with handles
  • protective pad and storage cover
  • user manual

The inner liner is different depending on which model you have. If you already have an Instant Pot at the same quart size, your other liner may or may not fit in the new model you buy. If you have an 8 Quart Duo Evo Plus, the liner will in the Pro Crisp. And if you have one of the other Instant Pot models and buy a Duo Crisp the liners should be interchangeable assuming it’s the same quart size.

The additional accessories compared to other models are needed for the air frying cooking programs.

If you’re new to Instant Pots, extra sealing rings are a must-have accessory. You may want to consider buying another one or two if you’re going to be doing a lot of pressure cooking. The sealing rings pick up the smells from what you’re cooking. No one wants an onion-flavored cheesecake. Having an extra sealing ring to two allows you to dedicate one to savory dishes and one to sweet, for example.

  1. Thank you for this informative article! I feel like it’s not easy finding all this info in the listings for these appliances online so this got right to the point. I think I’m going to go with the Pro since it’s a second model and could be more reliable. I also like the black exterior and the dial. I have never used an air fryer before but I thought it would be worth it to get a combo appliance since I already love pressure cooking. It will definitely save on space having both in one. Thanks for the article!

  2. A great article! Just what I was looking for. The details of the comparisons are incredible. Thank you for all your research. I have some thinking to do (broaden my horizons when it comes to recipes and such). I know I will feel much finer comfortable when I make my decision.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and so happy to hear the research was helpful. Best wishes on your decision and future cooking adventures!

    1. I haven’t heard or looked to see if they’re giving any hints. If you’re hoping for one, you might want to try contacting the company. If they’re even considering it, it would probably help them to hear from potential customers.

  3. Finally someone with a well thought out review, I have been searching for the differences between the two and to me it seems like going with the pro crisp is the better option, because I just know how annoyed I will be without handles! I have never owned a I instant pot, but being a mom of two seems like a good idea to get one.

    1. Hi Emily
Thanks for reading. I have a couple of Instant Pots including a Duo Evo Plus. And I am a big fan of the handles on the inner liner.

  4. I will purchase the instant pot pro crisp. Can you tell me if the assessors from Amazon for the Duo Crisp fit the Pro Crisp? Thank you. Your article was very helpful.

    1. Hi Matthew –

Thanks for stopping by and happy to hear you found the article helpful. Since the Pro Crisp is an 8 quart, the Duo Crisp accessories should fit the Pro Crisp. The Duo Crisp comes as a 6 quart and 8 quart. Most accessories, in general, are for the 6 quart model. If you look around you may find slightly larger accessories to make use of the extra space in the 8 quart models.

I hope that helps and best wishes with your purchase!

  5. Excellent side by side comparison – thank you. I think I’ll go with the Duo Crisp because I like that I’ll still be able to use my old Duo inner pot (never needed handles before!) and I won’t be broiling so I think the extra 50 degrees probably won’t make enough difference to warrant the much higher price.

  6. Hi, It was a great article. I got lost though in the temperature choice. I would like to be able to choose my own temperature. I appreciate that they have made extensive testing and have chosen the ones, but sometimes you want to know at what temperature something is cooking, so you can use this feature for not that popular meals. Does it mean I should go for the Duo Crisp, please

    1. Hi Svetlana –

Thanks for stopping by. Typically specific temperature selections depend on the cooking mode. Sous Vide and Air Frying should allow you to set specific temperatures. Pressure cooking typically is a selection of low or high. You may also want to check with their customer service for specific questions.

      Hope that helps!
