3 ways to tell what size Instant Pot you have
Maybe you purchased your Instant Pot a while ago, received it as a gift, or picked it up at a garage sale or charity shop. How many quarts your Instant Pot is, isn’t really something top of mind, until you realize you have no idea how many quarts it is.
The quarts in your Instant Pot isn’t something stamped on the front. It’s not readily obvious where to find this information unless you still have the original box or receipt handy.

The most popular Instant Pot size is 6 quarts. It’s also the size most of the Instant Pot models are available in.
Currently, there are 4 Instant Pots sizes available:
|Quart size||# of models available|
And this isn’t including a few of the special lines including the Star Wars-themed models exclusively available at Williams Sonoma. Of course, a Chewbacca makes sense as an 8 quart Instant Pot. And the little BB8 as an Instant Pot 3-quart mini model.
How to tell which size Instant Pot you have
There are a few different ways you can tell how many quarts your Instant Pot is.
Check the model as some are only available in 1 size
Certain special Instant Pot models are only available in a single quart size.
For example, if you have an Instant Pot Max, Instant Pot Duo SV, or Instant Pot Smart WiFi, you own a 6 quart model. These models are exclusively offered in the 6 quart size.
The Instant Pot Pro Crisp + Air Fryer is an 8 quart model. And this is the only Instant Pot to be offered as only at the 8 quart size.
Check the front control panel of your Instant Pot to confirm which model you own. The name should be on the upper right of the control panel on the front of your Instant Pot.
Take out a tape measure, and check the dimensions
If you’re up for a little more work, then pull out a tape measure and check the actual dimensions of your Instant Pot.
Simply measure across the top of your Instant Pot from handle-to-handle:
- 3 quart Instant Pots are just under 12 inches wide.
- 6 Quart Instant Pots are about 13 inches across
- 8 Quart Instant Pots are a little more than 14 inches wide
- 10 Quart Instant Pots are just under 17 inches wide.
If you have an older model Instant Pot, it’s possible you have a 5 quart electric pressure cooker. It was originally available as a Lux or Duo.
Check the sticker on the back of your Instant Pot
There is a sticker on the back of your Instant Pot with a few pieces of useful information on it. Be warned, the type is a little small so you may need bright light and a magnifying glass to read it clearly.
On this sticker is both the model name and number of quarts of your specific Instant Pot. Look for the “Volume” line below the Model name. It’s about the 3rd line down from the Instant Pot logo.
If you haven’t turned your Instant Pot around recently, the sticker wouldn’t be something you’ll notice unless you’re specifically looking for it.
So how many quarts is your Instant Pot?
If you don’t know how many quarts is your Instant Pot, there are a few ways to check. Certain models are only available in a single size (usually 6 quarts). Or you could measure the width of your Instant Pot and check against the dimensions. Otherwise, check the sticker on the back of your Instant Pot and it mentions the volume.
Do what size Instant Pot do you own? And is that enough for you or are you thinking you want to buy a different sized electric pressure cooker?
thank you! this article was really helpful!
Happy to hear Donna. Thanks for stopping by!
This article was helpful for finding out what size mine was. Mine is in an 8 quart as confirmed by the label you suggested To find. Just so you know mine is a duo +80. I don’t think you had that model listed as an 8 quart available one.
I appreciate you taking the time to research and answer this question. Thank you.
This was great.
I bought a instant pot stainless steel liner and would like to know what size it belongs to…it is about 8” across and 5” high, and has this number on it AB18480
Hi Martha –
That’s likely a 3 quart liner though I can’t find a reference to the number you’ve mentioned. I’m assuming it’s a genuine IP liner? Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you for your article, it was very helpful! I started off by measuring the top of my Instant Pot top from handle to handle (13 inches) and then confirmed that I have the 6 quart size by reading the sticker in the back of the pot.
Thank you so much! I’ve been looking small jars to make yogurt in rather than pouring everything into the insert pot. If I can find the right jars to fit well, I believe it will save space in my refrigerator for cooling as well as storing while waiting to be eaten. Also, my Instant Pot Duo was a Christmas gift from my husband & two daughters. I’d put off buying one for many years. I kept missing the sales too. Broke my heart when they dropped to $35 because I was completely & totally broke. 🤦🏽♀️
Love the’ set it & forget it’ when cooking rice & yogurt. I’ve become quite adept at cooking rotisserie chicken in the IP too, tho I’m considering the Ninja Foodi with crisper & air fry or the Ninja Foodi grill with probe. So much I love about the Instant Pot that it makes it tough to decide. Thanks again.
I have one inner pot that actually has the quarts marked and another that just has the max line, I think the one with measurements is from an earlier 6 quart model. Too bad they changed
Thank you for helping me figure out the size of my instant pot!
I have the Duo Crisp + Air Fryer and mine is 6 quart. I also measured then checked the tiny little print on the label. It was exactly what you said it should be! Thanks.
That’s great news, however I had to throw out the outer unit, after a shelf gave way in the kitchen and chaos ensued after It hit the ground. I’m in the market to replace it now, and I’ve kept the inner pot with an imprint of “Instant Pot AE 19016” would you happen to know what size instant pot that came out of???
Sorry to hear about your previous Instant Pot. Maybe try measuring the inner pot and checking the dimensions on Amazon.
